A Corporate Social Responsibility Tale
Andrew turned the glossy page as he slumped down into the worn, but comfy chair, his neck resting on one of the arms and his feet dangling over the other. The image on the page before him, a colorful drawing of a wide river flowing through the middle of a lush jungle, at times reflecting the early night sky above in its waters, was captivating. In the river, swimming not too far from the reeds on the far bank was a manatee. With each splash of its tail, bubbles floated up into the sky and converted into the stars of the Milky Way. The pages before had talked about how if he sat outside, quieted his mind and observed, with a little bit of patience he would be able to discover magic in nature, even in places that were primarily concrete or seemed ordinary. While he knew he wasn't going to see air bubbles turn into stars, he was eager to give this activity a try. Andrew looked over at his mom who was a few feet away from him, reading the newspaper at a round table in front of the new bookshelf. It had been donated to the homeless shelter recently and was oozing with books of varying colors, styles, and topics. The next three books on his reading list, he'd already carefully narrowed down. With a little bit of prodding, his mom agreed to join him outside, and they made their way to the yard just beyond the side door of the building. This wasn't their first time staying in a homeless shelter, but it was Day 2 in this one for them, and Andrew was looking forward to it more than he had in the past.....
At a conference Michael recently attended, the organization incorporated a social impact project focused on impacting families in need. Participants joined together to build bookshelves, select books, make care packages, and write letters of kindness for the families, in total, supplying libraries to three homeless shelters. Remembering the difference giving back can make on someone, the following weekend Michael took his children out to volunteer in the community together.......
Friday morning as Mariam was sitting in her office, her phone rang. Another local business owner had seen in the media the libraries her organization supplied to the homeless shelters, and wanting to do a project to make an impact as well, called her for more information......
